Laurence Oliver Udall was born in 1943 in Baslow in Derbyshire. When young, time spent on an upland farm in the Derbyshire village of Sheldon, nurtured a keen interest in farming life. As a landscape painter, his early work centred around the farms, dales and moorlands of the Peak District of Derbyshire, mainly on the great estates of Chatsworth and Haddon. In 1997 after taking early retirement from the Chatsworth Estate, he and his wife moved to Gloucestershire, where he continued to paint Derbyshire scenes; but the Cotswold landscape with its scattered unspoiled villages, farms and watermills, became an important source of inspiration. He was successful in being chosen to exhibit a painting in the Royal Academy Summer Exhibition of 2018. His paintings depict a way of life in harmony with nature, a sense of continuity and rural peace.
